Best part of oblivion was spellmaking and exploits. I played on console so bugging it actually took work, it felt like I was a real wizard unlocking secrets of the universe and shit. 40,000 magicka 125% damage reflection and resistance, water walking, a spell that’s designed to destroy fatigue on npcs perminantely making them trip over and be unable to move yet still alive and able to yell at you for shit. An ability to use that and make it flagged as “friendly” by adding a heal effect as its primary so they don’t even turn hostile. Insidiously fun wizardry. You can place items in npc inventory if it’s weightless, the blue mages hood is weightless they’ll wear it. Enchant with self fire damage 5 points and watch them burn themselves to death willingly because of how ridiculous the npc engine was. Charming the leader of the Empire to follow you into the cheydenhal well, destroying his stamina and leaving him trapped and drowning in a well forever next to the dead mage apprentice. It was limitless. No mods or commands needed.
Todd Howard made the game easy to exploit so that someone would make it come to life as an all powerful being and in turn end his suffering
some of you have never walked right into that imperial ambush, same as us and that thief over there, and it shows
Hey you, you’re finally awake. You were trying to cross the border right? But you’re dummy thicc and the clap of your ass cheeks lead you into an imperial ambush. Same as us and that thief over there.
One of my favorite tidbits about Oblivion is that, when Bethesda brought Patrick Stewart in to play Uriel Septim, they gave him this big 90-page booklet detailing the character’s history and background and motivations, and they were really worried that they’d gone overboard and given him too much. Meanwhile, Stewart was delighted–he’s said that it was the best character prep he’d ever been given, and he wished more people would do that.
It’s worth noting that this character dies in the tutorial
It’s so important to remember that tumblr is bad. Has been bad. And will likely remain bad for the foreseeable future. And that is vital to our survival. If Tumblr was a good website that worked, it would get turned into a corporate hellscape like every other site. It’s so important that Tumblr is broken and poorly run and impossible to effectively navigate. It’s all that’s keeping us safe.
“ao3 should have an algorithm” ao3 should continue only giving me exactly what I ask for which happens because I know how to use the search, sort, and filter functions
